Cute But Critical
Soft art for hard truths.
Who’s Behind It
Cute But Critical is run by Nicole Sell.
I’m a social worker and MSW student who spends a lot of time thinking about systems, the ways they fail people, and the strange coping mechanisms humans develop to survive inside them.
This project sits somewhere between art, commentary, and coping strategy. It’s a way to say the quiet parts out loud without pretending everything needs to be soft or inspirational.
Why This Exists
I wanted advocacy merch that didn’t feel empty. Not vague “awareness” language. Not inspirational wallpaper. Not mass-produced faux-progressive nonsense.
I wanted designs that actually say something about housing, mental health, neurodivergence, queer identity, protest, burnout, systemic failure, and the daily absurdity of living in systems that keep hurting people.
So I made it.
The Point of the Aesthetic
The contrast is the whole thing. Cute art, soft colors, animals, weird little mascots, and then a message that lands with actual weight.
A raccoon, an otter, or a mushroom gets someone to look. The wording does the rest. It opens the door to conversation without pretending the issue is soft just because the art is.
What You’ll Find Here
Designs currently span five main categories: housing and economic justice, mental health and neurodivergence, protest and resistance, education and immigration, and LGBTQ+ identity.
Everything is available through Redbubble on stickers, shirts, hoodies, mugs, tote bags, and other everyday stuff people actually use. The shop keeps growing as new ideas hit and new designs get added.
